5 Ways To Get Your Curls Back

Hair Care

1. No Heat

Give yourself at least 6 months of heat free hair. That means no blow dyer, no curl wand, and no flat iron. Take a break from the heat. I know, it’s tough but you got this! Heat permanently damages your hair and leaves it lifeless. There is no going back, unless…

2. Trim or Cut Your Hair

As mentioned with must do #1 heat permanently damages your hair. If your hair is damaged permanently, trimming your hair will be a life savor! If you don’t want to do a big chop, start by trimming little by little. Allow for your natural hair to grow and as you reach a length you’re comfortable with, chop! Let your hair grow out and get frequent trims…very frequent trims! You’ll see a HUGE difference.

3. Chemical Detox

If you’ve dyed your hair as often as you change nail polish… we have to take a break. Over-processing your hair can have irreversible affects causing your curl pattern to loosen, become dryer, and harder to handle. Why does this happen? There are 3 layers that make up a strand of hair. The cuticle, the cortex and the medulla. During the coloring process the cuticle is damaged. The cuticle’s role is to protect the inside of the hair shaft from damage. If you want your curls to come back to life, take a break from chemicals and heat all together. You’ll thank me later!

4. Find Your Go To Transitioning Hair Style

When I was transitioning it was hard for me to feel confident and content with my hair when straightening my hair was my go-to. When transitioning, my curls were still damaged and I didn’t like leaving my hair natural. I experimented and found a hair style that allowed me to feel good, look good, and kill time as I nursed my hair back to health. My go-to was a high bun infused with oils making it easier to manage throughout the week. I would leave my hair in a bun, slick back, clean and out my face. Find a hair style that works for you

5. Deep Condition

As you transition to natural hair, it is so important to keep your hair moisturized. Deep conditioning revitalizes your hair by restoring moisture and strength. There are many different deep conditioning treatments you can try, each with their own special effects. You can deep condition weekly or biweekly, entirely up to you.
